Struggling to animate!

Posted by D-SuN - April 29th, 2009

I'm finding it extremely hard to animate these days. Even with my Cintiq!
I don't seem to have trouble as much when I draw the clean frames first. But if I try to block out the animate with quick sketches, I find that when I draw the clean frames on top, it looks like shit. I'm finding it hard to use the onion skin and have the rough sketched (its faded) under my new layer in which I do the new drawing. And this is seriously starting to bug me now because I've just spent all this money on the Cintiq and i'm not putting it to good use.
ALSO!
My Cintiq, my beautiful wacom, Has a few issue. I don't know if anyone reading this has a Wacom Cintiq 12wx or not; if so, I'd like to know if you have this issue.
The surface of the screen is smooth at some parts, and rough at other parts. I'll be brushing along a smooth surface but on other parts I can feel and hear the pen dragging along the screen and I can't help but to worry! When you spend this much money it's like DAIM, you'd expect it to be good!
So back to my animation issue.
drawing rushed, basic frames to get the movement down is great, I can do that rather well, as provided below

But when I do the clean frames on top, they still look rough, the thickness of some lines changed from frame to frame, giving it a bumpy feel as provided below

This animation here, was directly clean, no blocked out basic stuff. And it looks pretty good too.

Maybe I'm not a cleanup artist? I'll keep practising anyways. I hope to ripp out a lot of cartoons and short films.

Pretty much all i've got to say.

Good luck!

i don't know that much about animating, but you are really awesome at it so keep on going! =D whatever you improve on will just make everything you produce even better =) good luck with everything!

That kick combo looks really good. You have to understand you're also animating in a vector program. Cleaning up is going to make it look a lot simpler and "rougher" than if you had the precision of a pencil and paper. Pay attention to how you change your drawing style when you are rushing and when you are slowing it down. Sorry about the bumpiness of your Cintiq...maybe check out Wacom's customer support and see what they can do for ya.

hey your red moon game isnt the guy that wants to become king isnt he the armed with wing guys brother?and then the girl ivana shes the sister of the armed with wings guy. so ur using them for a different game concept?I see interesting!

9001 if u do not like the game controls that are in his games then just dont play the game. if your bothered by it that much a freaking game, then just do not play it

It must take much free time to animate something. I began to animate a little something. I say it's like climbing a tree. It's much more fun to climb it than to watch it. But then, I learn alot of things... like how much I sweat when climbing... Maybe I lack water... Also, I don't have free time yet, and I can't think of a plot. Damn school, or at least the one I go to.

(To 9001) It's called a challenging game..don't whine to the creator because you're too much of a bitch to figure it out or get good at it....it was a great game and just because you don't have the skill or mental patience to play it that's your problem not the author's.

the armed with wings 1 and 2 was great, but will there be a third game in the series? and red moon is awesome by the way

Dude? Master your playing system skills first. A.W.W had no jump, A.W.W. 2 had jumping issues involving the charging system, Red Moon had an impossible level due to a consistant glitch involving flying thru the wall. You fixed the problems with running in Red moon, but added a wall jump issue. I prefered the fighting in A.W.W. 2 to red moon, because the enemys went down faster, and the fighting was funner. I am not a hard core gamer; I have other things in life I prefer over gaming. The red moon dash system was so useless it was a waste of programming. Jumping over the damn enemies was less annoying then killing them.

Your frame by frame animations look really good, could you give me some tips on how to make movements look realistick? I know how to draw nice looking characters, but even a simple walking animation is really tricky and it's really hard to find some good example material.

Hope you can/want to help.

check out Richard williams Animation survival kit. Its fat book, you can try getting it form a local library, or u can download the pdf file on the web somehwere, pretty handy shit.

Doesn't JohnnyUtah have a Cintiq 12wx?

Red Moon is a great game I love it!
