AS3 & Armed with Wings DEMO

Posted by D-SuN Jul. 18, 2009 @ 3:33 PM EDT

Been sitting here for a good 5 hours, learning Actionscript 3.0 and Flash Develop. Both very interesting. But my god, actionscript 3 is a pain in the butt so much so that I'm nearly tearing my hair out trying to get things to work! This is also the first time I'm using external .as files too. Very new to the concept. However I shall continue to explore and learn.
I'm also having problems with Armed with Wings 3. Not technical issues at all but major, MAJOR motivation issues. Not even a big pay check is motivating me. The project is nearly dead to me! I can only bear about 10 minutes on it a day. I should have planed it much better. The original design turned out to be too complex and since then I've been blindly working as I go and as a result I've created a mostly boring experience. At least that's how it feels to me.
And so I'm going to post a demo for you Newgrounders to play and review. I'd love some feedback on how much you enjoyed it, if you would continue to play, what you would like to see implemented, gameplay mechanics... yaaada yadaa....

Armed with Wings 3 DEMO

I hope you enjoy this piece of turd. At least the graphics are good.

EDIT: Armed with Wings 3 is Actionscript 2.0

so are you using classes now?
AS3 + flashdevelop can help you produce some really powerful stuff, stick with it.

Jul. 18, 2009 | 3:49 PM D-SuN responds:

Yup. Still trying to get my head around it and actually UNDERTAND what I'm coding. I'm sitting here typing 'n I'm all like "why am I importing this? extends movieclip? e:Event, why the e:?"
I've been reading over some AS3 stuff briefly for the past week or so, but the last few hours I've been following this guys tutorial

Jul. 18, 2009 | 3:57 PM HyperGumba says:

Daniel, the demo is plain awesome and not only the graphics. I really like the gameplay like it is. Maybe insert air combos? Or let the eagle have some attacks ,too?

I amreally looking forward to see that completed,I hope your motivation comes back. Thumbs up ! :D

Jul. 18, 2009 | 4:07 PM D-SuN responds:

Its great to hear that it is liked! I should add in some air attacks.
As for the eagle, i think it needs more. than just picking things up, but probebly not attacks. The hero will take care of that :P
Thanks for your feedback.

Jul. 18, 2009 | 3:57 PM Wazao says:

Wow, i played 5 min of this, and i think this could be your best work. Keep workin on it, it has HUGE potential, and it can become a masterpiece.

Jul. 18, 2009 | 4:08 PM D-SuN responds:

I really hope it does. If I can just get motivated again I can let the creativity flow and create something fantastic, rather than dragging myself through the process and ending up with a disappointing experience.

Jul. 18, 2009 | 3:58 PM Karshgen says:

I played the demo. I did like the graphics. One thing that bothered me is after every hit the monsters sorda faded away, the same thing that happens when they died. it was hard to tell if i killed it or not. Also the portal at the end of the stages were somewhat hard to see for me. There were no mid air attacks which i assume will be added. I enjoyed it though

Jul. 18, 2009 | 4:09 PM D-SuN responds:

Hmm I agree, the enemys do die rather oddly. I will try and fix this so if they have 0 health, they wont get up then die.

gameplay needs work,
right now to fight enemies all you have to do is spam
a, a , down + a

rinse and repeat

other then that I like the concept

It looks great!, but some parts it lags and there is only 2 sections?
like I am meaning at the next part, there were no key.

Read this, it taught me pretty much everything I know about AS3
One thing the book won't tell you is that it's important to use weak references when you create an event listener, example

addEventListener("enterFrame", runtime, false, 0, true);
.....................................
.....................................
.................. ^ this

Good luck

Jul. 18, 2009 | 4:16 PM Joelasticot says:

Yippee, NG's "no long strings" code fucking up a message again.
Basically what is important in the line of code I gave you is the last parameter, "true", which is by default set to false

Jul. 18, 2009 | 4:21 PM UploaderX says:

I say Daniel Sun, Taking AS3 class with Flash could be harder than you think.

Jul. 18, 2009 | 5:01 PM Slain-By-The-Bell says:

I found an error in the second area, when using the eagle to open the locked door at the very end, when I accelerated and hit the wall, the eagle went through the wall and outside of the white boundaries of the game screen. I could not move the eagle out of this, and had to call the eagle back to me.
Otherwise, I enjoyed the demo very much, though I do miss the black color palette, I like the sort of autumn-esque scenery. The eagle looks great, and I like having the combo finisher attack. I would continue to play it. I think that aerial combos should be added.

Jul. 18, 2009 | 5:08 PM TheBoob says:

I found a bug where if (on level 2) if you turn into a bird and fly up above the door to the gears and such, if you fly in between the first gear and second gear you get teleported ouside the edge of the map, doesn't happen 100% of the time, but i made it happen a few times. other than that game seems awsome!

Jul. 18, 2009 | 6:00 PM shadowlego says:

The game is fun, the graphics are awesome, but the controls.... well needs more work but other than that it was really one of the best game you ever made

Jul. 18, 2009 | 6:09 PM molkman says:

Hey, who did the music in your games, if you dont mind asking? Did you do it yourself, it's pretty cool

I don't know, but your games always seem very "unprecise" in moving, I hink that comes from the extreme decelerating if you let go a key, it would be way more forceful if you only added a short but powerful "stopping" animation.

Jul. 18, 2009 | 6:39 PM Noobtramp says:

Well, add the ability to attack while jumping, make sure that you can finish a sword combo the same way you can finish a melee combo (you know, an attack that sends the enemy flying)

overall
It's a pretty good game

Jul. 18, 2009 | 6:44 PM Sodaku says:

DAMN!!! That demo is really good. way better then red moon.

Jul. 18, 2009 | 6:58 PM 4urentertainment says:

Jul. 18, 2009 | 7:12 PM HiddenLink says:

its not turd, it is freaking amazing. i kinda miss the black and white graphics, but i guess i can still play shift or one of your old games if i need my fix. the game is great, and the different character shape from the original has me wondering what is gonna happen this time. if your pay doesn't bring motivation, at least let yor fans motivate you. go d-sun go!

Jul. 18, 2009 | 7:22 PM zrb says:

As far as art goes, its amazing.

But the lag threw me off. I still played through it and it was fun.

(Was Red Moon with AS2 ?)

Jul. 18, 2009 | 7:25 PM Steffs says:

WOW!!!!
I dont understand how you could say that that game is boring or disappointing.
This game (or series of games) is a MAJOR piece of art and criativity!!! Its just awesome. I hope you dont give up on the project, it has a GREAT ( I mean REALLY great) potential.
But if you dont feel like doing it or just aren't motivated enough just let it go.
Cheers to you and Good Luck!!

Jul. 18, 2009 | 7:25 PM That-1-guy says:

Adding to what Karshgen said, I also think that the Hero, as well as the monsters, should have multiple death animations.

The music was good, the graphics were just gorgeous.

Maybe you should add multiple ground combos depending on direction of arrow keys.

I'm also guessing that there will be multiple weapons, based on the icon of the fist in the corner.

Overall, this looks like it will be as good as the others.

Jul. 18, 2009 | 8:22 PM Johto says:

As a fan of the Armed with Wings series, I'm obviously very pleased to be able to get a sneak preview of the next title...
I've got to say, I am looking forward to it even more than I was before! The graphics, as you mentioned, were excellent - very fluid, and whilst keeping in line with your distinctive style, a real step forward. The gameplay mechanice themselves were masterfully implemented - the eagle in particular worked as well as always, and I found the edge clinging to be a nice touch.
Obviously it's still a work in progress, but right now this demo is showing the potential to be the best in the series yet! I really enjoyed it, and can only suggest a few things:
1) Obviously this would be fixed in the game itself, but the music needs to be properly implemented, possibly with different music for the boss?
2) Air attacks for both you and the eagle would be a nice touch, as mentioned by others, but I'd be interested to see more than one attack button, similarly to Armed with Wings 2? That said, if the image of a fist in the bottom left corner is anything to go by, I assume more weapons will be available; if so, perhaps being able to switch weapon mid combo to change its outcome? Again, this is clearly a problematic suggestion, but could be a nice thought.
3) If you're having trouble with motivation, try rewarding yourself with cake whenever you reach a certain milestone in the game development! :3
Either way, I really appreciate your work and hope that you enjoy making this next title as much as we'll no doubt enjoy playing it!
Good luck, and thanks for letting us play around with the demo :P

Nice demo o.o
Love the graphics.
There was one issue I had...The enemies' attack range. They could still hit you even if they didnt make contact, but other than that a good demo o.o

Jul. 18, 2009 | 11:36 PM zapperdude45 says:

Really cool, as soon as i go into it the graphics made me go woah! and still the gameplay was awesome. the only thing id like to see added is some magic attack, but not like the evil dudes magic like powering yourself up and making yourself look epic, id also love it if it were a little more face paced, thats about it thanks for the great gaming experience and keep at it!

Jul. 19, 2009 | 1:17 AM biIIgates says:

Really cool! AWW 2 is still my favorite. You cant jump attack in this demo. Im looking forward to this one.

I'm finding all you're comments very helpful and inspiring. Somehow I'm becoming more motivated to make sure this game is THE BEST experience can possibly deliver!
Back to work for me!

Jul. 19, 2009 | 1:49 AM stojkovski says:

Seeing how it's a demo, I'm sure you want to hear about any glitches.

So far I found 1 (possibly two).

The first being that was I do a killing punch to an enemy (not a down+a punch, a normal punch) he 'vaporizes'. If I quickly continue punching, the 'vaporizing' animation starts over. I'm sure it would've happened again if I punched again.

The second, and i'm not sure if this is a glitch, the boss fight was rather difficult to manouver in. Say one of the beams came down, I can't run through the flame until it vanishes completely. Even if it's alfa (opacity) is incredibly low. The damage always remains the same and I still go flying backwards.

Jul. 19, 2009 | 1:54 AM HyperGumba says:

Yeah,we did it,Daniels motivation is back :D

Good luck!

Jul. 19, 2009 | 6:34 AM EvilAngel23 says:

I enjoyed the demo. It looked fantastic. There are only a few things that I found fault with. The trees that act as foreground would block my vision of the battle, albeit rarely. The game also didn't feel as smooth as the other versions, but I'm sure that will be worked out by the time the game is done. I also find it a bit strange to give the boss a roar animation for his intro, yet have no sound. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a simple sound clip for a roar or something. But, that is just personal taste. All in all, great for what work you have put into it, and I look forward to seeing it completed someday.

Jul. 19, 2009 | 7:08 AM D-SuN responds:

of course in the final build there will be sounds effects. This is a demo.

Jul. 19, 2009 | 8:50 AM david414 says:

The graphics are astounding to say the least. The keys though, feel a little unresponsive. It was mentionned in an earlier post that this game is not as smooth as your others which is quite true. And midair attacks and combos are needed. I really liked the trees and the snake statues that like stood out. It felt like the main character was actually in the game. Another thing that I think you should add is some birds flying in the backround or something similar to add some liveliness to the game. And perhaps you could add skulls in the ground in some areas just to give some variety to the backrounds etc. Overall, nice game!

Jul. 19, 2009 | 10:29 AM blingo1234 says:

unbelievably great this is your best work yet great grapics and great gameplay but is missing air combos and the frame rate needs a bit of work but is looking like your best piece of work yet!

Jul. 19, 2009 | 10:42 AM DrRobot says:

Wow, this is very nice. You'll just have to trudge through it until you find something about it you like, then you'll code like wild fire (for the armed wings demo).

as for the coding, it takes time. I still like the IDE, but i do do some FD. The IDE provides the results i need, where FD provides the real will to code, and be clean.

Jul. 19, 2009 | 11:12 AM FateMaster33 says:

awesome. but, like our friend said down there, call in the air combos. and about the "Shoryuken" (haha) how about it just launch the enemy up? with that, jump, air combo, ground smash.
sounds cool to me. but of course it depends on your way to see it ^^
really good demo, keep it up!

holy shit that demo was great did you make the song? great job

Jul. 20, 2009 | 11:13 AM bogdanfrost says:

I've also played the demo ... bout 4 times. I've completed all the previous games, and frankly, if you would combine Armed with Wings 2 with Red Moon, and the graphics from the demo, you would make a piece of art (not counting that those games are pieces of art).
One thing I didn't like in the previous games, is that they are kind of short, and tend to be monotonous.
I know my suggestion implies a fuck load of work, but hear me out:
- A cool ideea would be to have the posibility to chose betwen AwW or Lorde, or Hawken, or Eivana, or... the big dude from Armed with wings 2.
- A character menu where you could build stats like in a RPG with the posibility to chose from fighting styles, or weapons, etc. or to upgrade them
- as far as the raven... beautiful work, however as you sad it's far too boring. why not put in some traps for it where you'd need AmW to get him out... or hell... make it chase after something.
...
I should stop before I become a total Know-it-all
If you'd help with the background stuff, or further graphic development, or concept stuff... maybe I can help...
Good luck in the future

Jul. 20, 2009 | 1:19 PM Kammce says:

Seeing this game brings me to want to start learning AS3. But it didn't bring me far enough. Seriously, if I wanted to use OOP I would just go back to programming in Java. But besides that, this game is gorgeous! The graphics and gameplay are awesome. Making games is what you do best. And adding more design and detail to the backgrounds really make it look good. Oh, and could you tell me how you create the "breaking up" text effect. The one you used on the "Armed with Wings 3" text.

Jul. 21, 2009 | 10:44 PM D-SuN responds:

I used 3D Studio max to get get that text to break apart. Would never be able to do it in flash. I installed some plugin Swift 3D MAX v3 that renders from 3dsmax to vector.

Jul. 22, 2009 | 7:11 PM gunman095 says:

Amazazazing
here are the things that could be improved in my opinion:

-more weapons
-more attacks and combos (there is only one key for attacking) like in armed with wigs 2 that you can throw magic
-a block attacks key
-jump higer
-more stuff to do with the pet sorta thing (bird) like attacks
-it would be nice if enemies attacked the birdie
-more puzzles
-more enemies
-more projectile throwing enemies
-flying enemies
-bird helping you in battle too..a little

things that i liked:

the colors, i love that gold look
-i really loved the music
-also unlike armed with wings 2 in wich you didnt have anyone to help you here you have the bird wich doesnt really help you in battle but is useful nevertheless
-err..um, everything else i didnt mention i liked

so keep it up! Great work so far
i love it.

So have a break and relax and recharge.

Wow, pretty awesome demo.

but i actually preferred thet "red moon" and the AW2 style....

but for a puzzle it is actually pretty good. as for the graphics, very awesome, but somehow i prefer the other graphics. i dunno, its simply good... its fits the "last samurai" theme more than the AWW3 graphics.

Jul. 30, 2009 | 11:36 PM yumigami says:

The demo was quite well done I've experinced one glitch and that was the level before the boss while iam trying to take the eagle and put the key to the door the eagle glitched outside the level and couldn't get back inside the area until a few seconds after.
Other wise I like the new zone it felt different in a really good way and I cant wait till the final release off the finished version.

Aug. 11, 2009 | 4:23 PM darkshadou says:

The Demo overall is good man, the only opinion i would have is for you to change the color of the game. I favored the whole "dark, shady and silhouetted look" with the previous games. btw another light people on fire game?

Aug. 19, 2009 | 8:10 PM bombrider says:

I'd definetly like to play it when it is ready. One thing I definetly felt was for the bird to have more of a purpose. It just seemed like you just kill all the enemies until you get to a door, then you find a key which there was really "go from point A to point B." I like that there wasn't a meter which times how long you can have the bird out, as that was just plain annoying in the first game, but still...something is lacking. Also it'd be nice if you could use the bird for things other than for stuff you literily HAVE to use him for (maybe secrets, or he can carry powerups with him or health, etc).

I noticed that this character, unlike the other characters thus far, uses his fists rather than a weapon. Though seeing that bird gave me an interesting idea. I think it would be cool if the character somehow utilized the bird as part of his fighting somehow. Maybe at the end of the character's attack combo, he could simply point forward and the bird could sort of "Dive bomb" forward then return to his normal position. Maybe a different key or whatever. Just an idea.

When I was facing the boss it was glitchly.
I get hit from his attack behind me and I fly back. wtf?
graphics are fantastic.
I never try action script 3 but, it looks hard.

Wow, this was amazing, it is should be your best game yet.It would be nice to have air attacks, some different types of attacks or a special super attack. I loved the graphics and the music was amazing

Wow big improvement D-San!
Nice and vibrant. Wasn't able to get the Key and Bird thing to work properly though. I wont nitpick lmao. Anyway, hope all is well and looking forward to our next collab.

Sep. 15, 2009 | 4:36 AM nez1536 says:

The demo is actually quite good. Love the graphics, though IMHO in the world of Blackmist, everything should be darker. Gameplay is nice, controlling eagle too. I really like how the final blow (if you use down+s during the combo) affects the enemies, though I'd prefer a bigger variation of attacks. Anyway, AwW3 is going to pwn.

Great demo mate i cant wait to see it in full version,im a fan of this games that you´re doing..armed with wings 2 was just epic i loved the skills with the weapons specially with fire sword :P i just love the way you make those skills like in redmoon also that was really good but still i keep with armed w wings 2 XD
anyway just giving my support here keep with the good work mate and i will be waiting for this new version...laterz

Nice Ceros. The game went from 'la lala lala' to 'destruction of your family'. It kinda felt like I fighting the boss with a tooth pick, but a few deaths can clear that up. Great game.

armed with wings demo.. it was good whats there.. the graphics are really nice..
but it could use some air attacks..
and perhaps his sword (unless thats some sorta unlockable later on then nvm)
also i think the difficulty progresses too slowly... as all of those levels way to easy and the difficulty barely got harder.

those things aside its very good and i hope you get the motivation to finish it! as this is something id wanna play most definetly..
